The current model of the Corvette has been launched back in 2013 and since then it has been available in its most basic form with the naturally aspirated LT1 V8. In order to bring the car to its paces, GM decided that this is the right time for the high performance of the car, the 2016 Corvette Z06. Unlike the more track focused models, the Z06 package is aimed at people who are looking for a fun car to drive which also happens to be great to drive rather than having an all out track car with nothing but a steering wheel in its cabin.
The model is already available for sale in most showrooms and it comes in two different flavors. The coupe version starts at just under $80,000 while the cabriolet will cost around $7,000 more. While these prices may seem a bit steep, take into account that the Z06 offers more power and torque than the equivalent European sports car and costs just a fraction of the price. On top of that, it does look better in many people’s eyes and even though it is not perfect, it is very close to perfection.
The car uses the same platform as the normal model but it does come with a lot of upgrades over the base car such as an improved running gear, engine and even exterior. The 2016 Corvette Z06 adds a slightly different suspension system with the usual carbon-reinforced plastic leaf-spring in the back which provides the car with very unique handling characteristics. The brakes have also been improved with larger rotors in the front while the wheels are now 20 inch rims wrapped in Pilot Sport tires. The Z07 package on the other hand will add to these carbon ceramic disc brakes with new calipers in the front, higher performance Sport Cup tires as well as new center section for the rear spoiler which will not be adjustable.
2016 Corvette Z06 Exterior
The exterior of the 2016 Corvette Z06 also has a unique aerodynamic package which is there to provide a lot more downforce than usual. All the pieces are adjustable in order to make the car fit any driver and most of them can even be detached which is a real bonus for those wanting to use it on the streets.
On the inside, the 2016 Corvette Z06 is quite similar to the usual car having most of the usual extras as standard. It includes dual zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery with sport seats, satellite navigation as well as an infotainment system and even a great audio unit.
2016 Corvette Z06 Engine
Under the hood of the 2016 Corvette Z06 there is a 6.2 liter V8, just like in the base model. However, this time it has been supercharged to provide up to 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The engine also received an intercooler, a heat exchanger for the intercooler, an oil-cooler as well as a new hood which directs air to the newly installed intercooler. These upgrades allow the new Z06 to provide a flatter torque curve which could be much better on the track. Unfortunately GM did not release any official numbers for the new car but it seems that it can do up to 199 MPH without the extra Z07 package which adds more downforce and drag. On top of that, the car is expected to hit 60 MPH in around 3.5 seconds when equipped with the 7 speed manual gearbox while the 8 speed automatic version should be able to lower that time by at least half a second.
Chevrolet also offers a unique package for all the buyers of the Z06. For an extra $5,000 fee these people will be able to assemble the engines used on their own cars while keeping the warranty unchanged. In this case, a professional will assist the buyer during every step of the process.
