McLaren is currently trying to diversify its roster of cars in order to give their customers more choices and also to allow them to grow as a company. They are currently making four different models with one more to come in the next few months. One of these is the 2016 McLaren 675LT which has been first announced at the Geneva Auto Show and it was meant to go into production later this year. However, because the British car manufacturer managed to sell the entire lot of 500 vehicles, they started making them a bit faster than expected. Also because of this, you will only be able to buy one used which is a bit of a shame considering the car bears a legendary name, the “Longtail”, first used on the F1 GTR which was nearly 20 inches longer than the production model of the F1.
Even though it has a different name than the rest of the cars in McLaren’s lineup, the 675LT actually shares a lot of its parts with the lesser 650S as well as it does looks quite similar with all of their other models. The price of the car is $350,000 but considering that all of them have already been sold, then expect to get one for a lot more than that.
2016 McLaren 675LT Engine
In terms of engine, the 2016 McLaren 675LT comes with the same 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 which is also found in all of their other models. However, this engine has more than 40% of its parts unique to it so it does come with new turbochargers, internals as well as a slightly different exhaust system, all of them meant to allow the car to be as lightweight and as reliable as possible, all while providing an impressive 666 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. The engine is then mated to the same 7 speed automatic as before which routes all of the power to the rear wheels via an electronically controlled differential.
The performance figures are good but not that impressive considering the cost of the car. The 675LT goes from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.9 seconds and up to a top speed of 205 MPH. The more impressive feature is that the car is a lot better to drive than pretty much any other road-going McLaren car.
Exterior of McLaren 675LT
On the exterior, the new 2016 McLaren 675LT is a bit longer than the usual 650S as well as slightly lower. While the original Longtail F1 was longer due to a longer rear deck lid, the 675LT is longer because it has a bigger front splitter in the front which is there to offer more downforce. Also, the car comes with a bigger active rear wing as well as new side skirts and a new under-body insert. Thanks to all of these, the car can provide up to 50% more downforce, all while keeping its maximum top speed relatively unchanged. The rear exhaust system has also been moved to the top of the bumper in order to protect it from small crashes which could occur on a racetrack.
The interior of the 2016 McLaren 675LT on the other hand is quite stripped down when compared to those of its siblings. While the design of the dashboard is similar, it has an all new steering wheel, it does away with the usual satellite navigation system and infotainment unit as well as with the old electrically adjustable seats. Instead, the car comes with carbon fiber seats which are thinly padded in order to save weight, an Alcantara wrapped interior as well as carbon fiber bits and even an optional magnesium roll cage which is quite unusual for a road-going car.
