In order to compete with the hugely successful 911, there are quite a few manufacturers which released all new models specifically for this purpose. Mercedes released their contender back in 2014 and it went into production shortly after. The 2016 Mercedes AMG GT S is the car built to get the crown from the 911 and become the best sports car in its class. It is the second car built and designed entirely by AMG, after the original SLS. It uses a similar chassis to the SLS but it has a 2 inches shorter wheelbase which should help the car handle better.
2016 Mercedes AMG GT S Price
It is reasonably lightweight as well with both the S and the base model weighing around 3,600 pounds, similar to the aluminum F-Type but slightly more than the 911. In order to compensate for the extra weight, the AMG GT has plenty of power under its hood as well as one of the more capable chassis on the market. The car costs pretty much just as much as its main competitors so the base model starts at $120,000 while the GT S starts at $150,000 because it also adds running gear upgrades over the extra power of the engine.
Engine of Mercedes GTS
Under its long hood there is a newly developed 4 liter V8 AMG engine which has also been installed in a few other cars since it was launched. Unlike conventional engines, the twin-turbochargers are between the cylinder banks in order to save space and dissipate the heat easier. The engine offers 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque and thanks to the great 7 speed AMG dual-clutch automatic, the car will accelerate to 60 MPH in 3.5 seconds and it will hit 193 MPH if it will run on a long enough straight line.
The design is one of the more interesting aspects of the 2016 Mercedes AMG GT S because it looks similar to its competitor, the F-Type. The AMG GT comes a sloping roof and a short back end which make for a GT-like design and the active rear wing offers the car a bit of flair even though it only deploys during braking or when cornering at high speeds. On top of that, its long hood completes the design of the car and it offers it a really nice set of proportions.
2016 Mercedes AMG GT S Interior
Inside the cabin it is quiet and refined when in normal mode and despite having all the luxuries offered as standard, it also manages to keep the driving pleasure intact. The steering response is great and the seats, despite being very comfortable, are one of the most supportive in its class.
