The original Boxster Spyder has been launched back in 2011 and even though it only offered a 10 horsepower bump and a better handling than before, the car was hugely successful so the German manufacturer had no choice but to release the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder. Unlike its predecessor though, this new model is more hardcore, more powerful and a lot more striking to look at. It comes with an all new engine, a different setup for its running gear as well a body kit which does make it look like the 550 Spyder from back in the day.
Release Date And Price
The car has been first released back in March 2015 at the Geneva Auto Show and it is expected to hit the US showrooms this month while in Europe it will likely come some time in the next couple of months. The price for the US model has been announced to be $83,000 which is $30,000 more than the usual Boxster but it is a small sum to pay for what this car can do. The drawback is that the Corvette Z06 costs the same, its similar to drive but it does offer a lot more power than it.
However, even though there are more powerful cars at this price point, many people will take the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder over any other car out there. Why? The answer is quite simple. It drives and feels better than most other cars currently on sale and it offers just the perfect balance between power and handling. In order to back up the power it offers, the new Spyder has the same front end as the Cayman GT4, meaning it is wider and it offers the same brakes as those on the Carrera 911. The rear end of the car on the other hand has a tuned Boxster GTS suspension system which sits 0.8 inches lower. Also, the steering system has been improved in order to offer more feedback to its driver and also allow it to respond as fast as possible to the driver’s input. The end result is that the Spyder drives just as good as its looks and it will never disappoint its driver.
2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder Engine
The engine on the car is the same 3.8 liter naturally aspirated flat-6 found on the Cayman GT4 or on the previous generation Carrera 911. It makes 375 horsepower and little over 300 lb-ft of torque which is a sizable increase over the old 3.4 liter flat-6. The best part though is that the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder can only be had with a 6 speed manual gearbox which sends the power to the rear wheels. The result is a perfect driver’s car which will satisfy even the most demanding drivers. In the future this will likely be replaced with a smaller turbocharged unit but until then, the 3.8 liter which revs to more than 7,500 rpm will be a joy to use on the track or on the road.
Exterior And Interior
The exterior of the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder has also been extensively redesigned with a new front end similar to the Cayman GT4, blacked out headlights, a new rear end with a bigger spoiler and splitter as well as the usual rear deck-lid found on the Spyder with two cowls behind the driver and its passenger. The wheels are also unique to this model but they are similar in design to those found on the Carrera 911. The interior of the car is a bit more minimalistic offering as standard a pair of sport seats which are wrapped in Alcantara. As an option, the buyer will get the chance of having a full leather interior as well as a pair of fixed carbon fiber seats which will save some weight over the standard ones.
